Children’s Day hosted by the Japan Foundation – Sunday, January 21, 2018

The Japan Foundation presents a family-fun day at Shoseian, with arts and crafts, such as making a Palm Leaf Cricket and Japanese Kites, and a special NOH performance by Master Michikazu Taneda!

Spirit of Haiku – Sunday, February 18, 2018

11am – Inspirational Garden Walk
Noon – Explanation of the “Spirit of Haiku” and learn how to write a classical Haiku
1pm – Share your haiku and enjoy a bowl of Tea!

Donn Draeger and His Koryu: Shindo Muso Ryu Jojutsu & Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutse: A Lecture & Video Presentation by Master Michael Belzer – Sunday, March 18, 2018

Donn F. Draeger was a pioneer in the martial arts of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. He authored over 30 books and magazines and “opened the door” for all future western practitioners to study the Koryu – classical martial arts of Japan.

Cherry Blossom Festival – Sunday, April 15, 2018

April is Cherry Blossom Time in Japan. The word “Matsuri” means joyful festival. Please join us, in conjunction with the Japan Foundation, to enjoy a full day of many exciting activities, including: Taiko drums, martial arts, tea ceremony, calligraphy, music, dance and fun learning the Japanese language!

Haiku – The Interior & Exterior of Being with Don Baird – Sunday, May 20, 2018

Don Baird is a master of many disciplines, including Haiku (Japanese poetry), inspirational art, and the Korean martial arts. Come spend some time with him as he reveals the world of Japanese petry to you. Some of his amazing art will also be on display. Yo will also enjoy a delicious bowl of Matcha Tea!

Intro to Hula – Kumu Maile – Sunday, June 17, 2018

Hula is quite popular in Japan! Come find out how fun it is and watch the movie called “Hula Girls” that shows how powerful the dance of Hula can be. Then, stay for our Intro to Hula class for all beginners.

Summer time means it is the season of the Yukata – this is the lightweight summer kimono. All participants will get to wear one and enjoy a delicious bowl of Math tea.

Omotesenke is one of the schools of the Japanese tea ceremony. Join us as we learn more about the uniwue methods this style uses to prepare tea in the traditional Japanese manner.

Each of us has an internal flow of energy that has been called “Ki” in Japanese and “Chi” in Chinese. Our energy field can be influenced and enhanced by a combination of sound, color, aroma and movement therapy. Join us as we experience all of this, along with a bowl of Matcha tea.

Chinese Tea Ceremony – Sunday, November 18, 2018

The concept of tea culture started in China. Join us as we learn more baout “Chayi” (the art of drinking tea and “Cha Wenhua” (tea culture).
